The Barabar Caves, located in Jehanabad, Bihar, are India’s oldest rock-cut caves, dating back to the 3rd century BCE during the rule of Emperor Ashoka of the Mauryan dynasty. These caves, carved into solid granite, were primarily used by Ajivika monks, an ancient ascetic sect. The caves are famous for their highly polished interiors, unique echo effects, and deep spiritual significance.
