Nagarjuni Caves

The Nagarjuni Caves, located near the Barabar Hills in Bihar, India, are a trio of ancient rock-cut chambers dating back to the 3rd century BCE. Commissioned by Emperor Ashoka's grandson and successor, Dasharatha Maurya, these caves were dedicated to the Ajivika sect, a now-extinct ascetic movement. Each cave bears inscriptions attributing its creation to Dasharatha and reflects the architectural prowess of the Mauryan period.​

1. Gopika Cave (Gopi-ka-Kubha):

• Location: Southern side of Nagarjuni Hill.​

• Description: As the largest among the Nagarjuni caves, Gopika measures approximately 13.95 meters in length and 5.84 meters in width. Its unique feature is the circular design at both ends of the oblong chamber, differing from the typical rectangular terminations seen in other caves.​

• Purpose: The cave served as a sanctuary for Ajivika ascetics, providing a secluded space for meditation and spiritual practices.​
